While open excavation and digging trenches is the most common method for laying underground services, sometimes there are obstacles in the way or you are unable to excavate the earth to lay pipe so trenchless technology was developed to allow for underground pipe installation without having to excavate from the surface. Horizontal Drilling Solutions
We offer three types of horizontal drilling:
Laser-guided pilot microtunnelling is the most accurate method for pipeline installation and can be used for piping of up to 450mm in diameter. This method is typically used for the installation of underground sewer and drainage pipes with the most common sizes being 150mm and 225mm diameter pipe. Pilot microtunnelling boring is most useful for soil conditions that are sandy and can generally go through soft clays but not hard clay or rock.
Auger boring is an effective horizontal boring method for rock and clay soils, suitable for piping of up to 600mm in diameter. Typically used for the installation of on grade service pipes.
Directional drilling utilises a drill head guided remotely in any direction and is commonly used to create tunnels for pipes and conduits to overcome obstacles when grade is not an issue. Types of pipe this method is useful for include: water reticulation, electrical and gas lines because they utilise flexible pipe without the need for a particular grade.
Depending on the size of the job, we’ll construct bore and receive pits using trench boxes or sheet piling, provide excavators and loaders, and erect temporary fencing if required. We have trench boxes available that are as small as 2.5m (L) x 1.5m (W) x 2.0m (H) and many that are larger for shoring earth.
